Songs that Define the 1960s Generation

I have recently been to see the Bob Dylan film, A Complete Unknown. I sing and play guitar in private. The film took me back to the 1960’s. I was 15 in 1960. It also reminded me of some of the songs in the film. I loved and sang these songs before they were forgotten. For me, these songs ‘sum up the sixties’ and remind of the days when I was young. It’s important to look at the words, especially with Dylan’s songs. He was never much of a singer, but his use of words is outstanding. These words speak to me over the years and bring back happy memories.

Blowing in The Wind
Very 1960s, beautiful sentiment still unfulfilled in 2025.

Universal Soldier
Yes, he was right, will all this fighting and war ever stop? I doubt it.

There but for Fortune
Many people have had or are having unpleasant lives. I have been so lucky with mine, a good life free of war and hardship. This song says it well.

Farewell Angela
What on earth was he on when he wrote this song, what to the words mean? if anything. This song has always intrigued me.
The 1960s generation got it completely wrong. They thought they might influence politics and war by writing and singing. It didn’t make one jot of difference. The fighting just continues. At least the “Hard Rain” didn’t fall……. Yet.
John Lennon also said it well in Imagine,
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion, too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

If Only
